MOTHER'S DAY -J. B PRIESTLEY

Summary of the Play Situation: Annie Pearson is overburdened with household work. Her family neither helps nor respects her. She is unhappy but too gentle to protest. The Swap: Mrs. Fitzgerald uses her magical powers to exchange personalities with Mrs. Pearson. Now Annie (in Fitzgerald’s personality) becomes bold, assertive, and outspoken. The Change: She shocks Doris by mocking her choices and refusing to serve tea. Cyril is stunned when she refuses to run errands. George is humiliated when she bluntly exposes how he is laughed at in his club. The Lesson: The family realizes their mistakes and feels guilty. Mrs. Fitzgerald changes back the personalities. But now the family respects Mrs. Pearson and promises to cooperate. Themes Gender Roles – Criticism of patriarchal mindset and undervaluing of women’s work. Family Relationships – Respect and equality are essential in families. Satire & Humor – Uses wit to highlight serious issues. Self-Respect – Women must assert themselves to earn respect. Conclusion The play highlights the need for mutual respect in family life. It teaches that women should not be taken for granted. True love and harmony in a family come only when everyone shares responsibilities.
